As higher education institutions around the world evaluate their new norms for educating students, one thing is clear: things are still different. Going Global: Empowering Virtual Exchange in 2022 and Beyond is a thought leadership series designed to help faculty and academic leaders incorporate international education experiences into their curriculum without requiring students to travel. Though this approach is particularly timely right now, our esteemed speakers will build the case and demonstrate the value of virtual exchange becoming an integral part of every curriculum and every student’s learning outcomes. Designed to go from a macro to a micro level of understanding, the Going Global series will provide participants with strategies to develop or increase COIL virtual exchange initiatives at their institutions.

While many institutions are now offering online courses and programs, partially as a result of the pandemic, most institutions are not yet focused on the global learning that COIL VE can support. Jon Rubin, Director of COIL Connect for Virtual Exchange and COIL Consulting, and Founder of the SUNY COIL Center, will introduce the COIL Virtual Exchange model, discuss why it is so vital in our emerging post-pandemic period, and explore how COIL may evolve into the future. This will also be an opportunity for our audience to weigh in with their observations about how COIL is or is not being integrated at their institutions, share thoughts, and ask questions about initiating or solidifying a COIL strategy on their campus.

Jon Rubin was Founder and Director of SUNY’s COIL Center from 2006-2017 and has since been Director of COIL Consulting. He co-facilitated four iterations of the COIL Leadership Institute between 2017-2021, first with the American Council on Education and later with Florida International University. He is co-writing the Guide to COIL Virtual Exchange, to be published by Stylus Publishers in April 2022 and launched https://coilconnect.org, a directory-workspace for institutions committed to COIL Virtual Exchange.
Karli Grant

American Higher Education Alliance (AHEA)
Karli Grant is president of AHEA. She is responsible for bringing value to the Alliance’s membership through the organization’s vision and mission, providing resources grounded in quality assurance measures, and procuring technology to support institutions and their students’ success. She possesses nearly 30 years of higher education and education technology experience. Prior to joining AHEA, Ms. Grant planned market strategies and lead the launching of new higher education software products. She also spent nearly a decade as a higher education administrator at three institutions.

Clayton Harrington is Vice President for Institutional Relations at AHEA. Prior to joining the organization, Mr. Harrington spent 8 years as the Director of U.S. Member Relations at ISEP, a global membership organization of over 330 universities and colleges. At ISEP, Mr. Harrington successfully managed member recruitment, directed engagement, and established strategy for the organization. He also served at the Chilean Ministry of Education where he established and maintained international partnerships between Chilean and American educational institutions.

Universidad de Monterrey in Mexico has a rich history of providing their students with projects, courses, and programs in intercultural competencies. In the year of 2021 alone, the institution offered 73 COIL courses in various disciplines. A foundational element to their success is a broad understanding of the benefits of internationalization for their students, faculty, and institution, which has helped drive adoption of COIL virtual exchange by faculty across their academic colleges. Brenda Garcia, Director of Internationalization Projects at Universidad de Monterrey, will discuss successful strategies to engage and prepare faculty to create innovative virtual exchange opportunities that lead to enriching student experiences.

Brenda García Portillo is Director of Internationalization Projects at the University of Monterrey. She has 20 years of experience in international education. Currently, her main responsibilities are the coordination of both, the Intercultural Competence Training Program at the UDEM and the internationalization at home activities such as COIL. She has been coordinating the COIL/VE projects for approximately 10 years at UDEM. She is a co -founder member of the LatAm COIL consortium and is part of the steering committee of the IVEC conference.

The value of virtual exchange courses is well-understood by institutions, faculty and students partaking of this education modality. Virtual exchange may be used to extend short-term study abroad programs, to introduce first-year students to international studies, or to internationalize course curricula with global content, participation, and perspectives. Developing a virtual exchange course involves attentive planning between partners on various aspects of designing the learning environment and student collaborative work. Dr. Stephen Tippett, AHEA Fellow for Technology and Curriculum Development, will offer best practices as well as technology tools to help participants develop or deepen their familiarity with creating engaging virtual exchange courses.

Stephen Tippett’s experience includes roles at the SUNY COIL Center and Arcadia University, The College of Global Studies with roles in administration and on the faculty. Tippett has worked in international education for 15 years, several of which were in South America, first in Ecuador with WorldTeach and then in Chile with the Ministry of Education. He currently specializes in instructional design for online teaching and eLearning course development. Tippett has an Ed.D in Curriculum, Higher Education, and Technology from the University of Delaware.
